I walked past the dead man

Was all over the sacred cigarette ends

I looked if anyone could see me
I didn't know if anybody did
I thought maybe the dead man's eye was on me
From underneath its lid
And I reflected how distant from the land we now are
Standing on the concrete, the light so dark you can't see a star
Yes and a shoe between my feet and the dirty gray stone so far beneath
And just then the South Wind blew a dead leaf...

It wasn't that I didn't stop because I felt any fear
No but I was just very very busy indeed
Yes I was just on my way here...

Then a saint knelt down in the shadow of
Some crates cabbages once came in
That people grew from the mud of a land far away
In exchange for bottles of gin
I sleepwalk right up like a tightrope artist
And I ask to be forgived and then I ask to be kissed

I screamed 'No' and backed away,
And the dead man gripped my toe
That's why I've only got one shoe now:
Because he would not let me go
I had to stay with him forever
Or else untie my shoelace bow, which I did
Just like they taught me how to when I was a kid...

So thank you Mister Dead Man: you did not hold me up at all
No, you did not bother me with your black nails in the wall
No you did not disturb me
Just as I did not thee...
One day when it's my turn Mister Dead Man
I hope you please kindly just walk past me.
